Performing Arts - Musical Theatre
About This Course
The BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre route) is a qualification aimed at those who want to progress to higher education and employment in the performing arts sector, but teaches skills that are transferable to all professions. The qualification is equivalent in size to one and a half A Levels, but is studied in one option block.
This is a performance course so students will be expected to perform in several shows and showcases throughout the year. You will need to attend extra rehearsals in order to complete devising your work.
You will also be expected to perform in the community as this will be part of your assessment. Alongside the practical work you are required to write essays and complete a research journal to build your evidence of work.
There is no formal written exam but there is a substantial amount of coursework as students have to write about their rehearsal processes and skill development.
Course Content & Assessment
Learners have to complete two modules: Musical Theatre Skills Development and the Performing Arts industry.
The musical theatre module requires students to develop a range of knowledge and skills related to different areas of the musical theatre industry. Within the module students complete a series of short learning projects where they are required to break down the traits used for each genre, apply the skills they have learnt and analyse the effectiveness of their performance.
The projects will allow learners to develop key complementary skills, such as professional skills and critical reflection.
The second module teaches students about the main issues and opportunities in the performing arts industry, and asks students to consider how this may impact their careers.
This module develops important skills in researching and presenting information, as well as helping students to understand the industry and employment opportunities within in it.
